Dear King High School Family, Principal Buss

As the summer winds down, we are looking forward to another year of helping students be Present, Positive, and Productive here at King High. Our goal, as always, is to help all students reach their goals, and working at King means we have the flexibility, resources, expertise, and compassion to make it happen. I am thrilled to be returning for my second year as Principal at such a wonderful school. My deep gratitude goes out to the students, staff, and families who supported me through my first year as an administrator; I hope to repay your kindness with strong and compassionate leadership for the 2019-2020 school year.

We got great news in June that our WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation has been renewed through the end of June 2022! Thank you to all the students, alumni, community supporters, and parents/guardians who volunteered time to host the WASC committee last April, and huge kudos to the King staff for their hard work in showcasing our exceptional programs. In our WASC report, we described the important of “The 3 P’s” in all that we do. Students, take a minute to think about what you will do this year to live by “The 3 P’s.” Being Present, Positive, and Productive is going to allow you to make the most of your education at King, and to be successful in the ways that are meaningful to you. Parents and guardians, please know that you are an important part of the team and we value your partnership. Do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions throughout the year.

I’m excited to welcome two new staff members to King this year. Chrissy Hill is our Special Education Resource Teacher, and will be with us in the mornings and teaching Study Skills at lunch time. Chrissy brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the district, and already knows some of our students from her previous work at Da Vinci Junior High. I am also pleased to introduce Helke (pronounced “hay-kuh”) Farin, our new Science teacher. Helke brings a diverse job history (including previously being a practicing physician) combined with strengths in connecting with students. Thank you for welcoming Chrissy and Helke into the King Family!

We are fortunate to be hosting several new programs at King this year. Our counselor, Sharlese Jones, is taking over as the District lead for the Career and Technical Education Internship program, and our Careers teacher, Blair Howard, is collaborating with UC Davis to pilot a new college and career readiness curriculum available to all students. Additionally, this year our leadership team will be formalizing King’s MTSS (multi-tiered systems of support) structures to provide additional supports to students who need them, when and where they need them.

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 28. All students, including new students, should attend morning session from 8:30-11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 28, even if they may be enrolled in an afternoon schedule this year. Please see other important dates on the back.
